Background of the Study

Family planning is a critical component of public health, contributing to improved maternal and child health outcomes, economic development, and women's empowerment. In Jigawa State, Nigeria, access to and utilization of family planning services remain limited due to cultural, educational, and infrastructural barriers. Nurse practitioners (NPs), with their advanced training and community-based approach, are well-positioned to enhance the delivery and acceptance of family planning services in this region.

Statement of the Problem

Despite national efforts to increase family planning uptake, Jigawa State continues to experience low contraceptive prevalence rates. Barriers such as cultural resistance, lack of awareness, and limited access to services hinder progress. The specific contributions of NPs in mitigating these challenges and promoting family planning in Jigawa State have not been thoroughly assessed.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the current involvement of nurse practitioners in family planning services in Jigawa State.

2. To assess the impact of NPs on the awareness, acceptance, and utilization of family planning methods among the local population.

3. To identify challenges faced by NPs in promoting family planning and propose strategies to overcome them.

Research Questions

1. What roles do nurse practitioners currently play in the provision of family planning services in Jigawa State?

2. How do NPs influence community awareness and acceptance of family planning methods?

3. What challenges do NPs encounter in promoting family planning, and what strategies can enhance their effectiveness?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse practitioners significantly increase the utilization of family planning services in Jigawa State.

2. Community engagement by NPs leads to higher acceptance of contraceptive methods.

3. Addressing identified challenges can further enhance the effectiveness of NPs in promoting family planning.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurse practitioners working in various healthcare settings across Jigawa State, including urban and rural areas. Data will be collected through interviews, surveys, and analysis of service delivery records. Limitations may include potential biases in self-reported data and variability in NP roles across different facilities.
